Retailing at under $600, the ASUS UL20A-A1 is a great laptop for anyone who needs a mid-range machine, capable of performing well under pressure, but not breaking the bank at the same time.
ASUS have produced many notebooks in the past, so we decided to take a closer look at this one in particular, to get a feel of exactly how much power it has, and what objectives we should set for it if we were to buy it.
ASUS UL20A-A1 Specifications and Features
CPU, Memory, Hard Drive
The ASUS UL20A-A1 features a 1.3GHz Intel processor, which has been selected from the Core 2 Duo range. This is certainly not the fastest processor we’ve ever spotted in a notebook – but if you compare it to a laptop which is 3 years old, you’ll definitely notice a big increase in the speed.
Also on tap is 2GB of DDR2 Ram, which we were slightly disappointed by. Not only does DDR3 Ram exist these days, we’ve also moved on to DDR4. Hence – only 2GB of the lower generation Ram was a little disappointing, and did affect the overall score for this device.
Same goes for the 250GB hard drive. This is certainly not a small amount of storage space – but we don’t think its particular generous either.
Graphics & Display
The display on the ASUS UL20A-A1 is very small – sizing up at 12.1″. For some people – this could be exactly what they want. For others, however, it may just be too small. If you’re a movie enthusiast and you intend to watch TV and movies on your notebook – this probably isn’t the machine for you.
One of the huge positives here however is the battery life. A smaller screen drains the battery less over time, and hence the ASUS UL20A-A1 is able to survive for 8 hours without being recharged! That is exceptional.
This computer is running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium edition. It also features a number of handy software add-ons by Asus, including the Express Gate technology – allowing you to connect to known wireless networks in less than 10 seconds. No more waiting around for your net book to “find a connection”.
Our Rating of the ASUS UL20A-A1
Overall, our experience with the ASUS UL20A-A1 was an average one. The specifications of the machine are not mind blowing, but then again neither is the price. The machine comes with a 1 year global ASUS warranty, which protects you from any hardware faults not caused by you.
The ASUS IceCool feature is also quite an extraordinary feature – ensuring that you laptop stays cool during use, even if the processor is working at full speed!
Overall, when looking at all aspects in respect to each other, we’ve awarded the ASUS UL20A-A1 a 4 star rating (out of 5). We would love to see a few improvements (or a further reduction in price) for it to gain the full 5 stars.
