Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Review

The Compaq Presario CQ61-420US is one of the cheapest Compaq notebooks that we have reviewed in recent time. As the company moves towards creating computers for the majority of the home / student market, prices are dropping whilst system specs remain at an average to high level.

We took the screws out of the CQ61-420US to investigate exactly what was coming standard in the box. The results might just surprise you.

Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Specifications and Features
CPU, Memory, Hard Drive
The CPU on board the CQ61-420US from Compaq is a dual core, VISION technology processor from AMD. Remember, there are two major chip makers in the CPU field, Intel and AMD Athlon. Hence, this chip is from the latter producer.

Only 3GB of Ram has been installed in to the CQ61-420US, which is slightly disappointing, given that most resource intensive programs these days require 4GB to work at optimum pace. Nevertheless, for the price, a 1GB reduction is certainly not the end of the world.

Finally, a 250GB hard drive is included as standard. This is a 7200RPM SATA disk, which again is not at the top of the field, but not at the bottom either. We always like to see greater amounts of space at hand, but again we can forgive the CQ61-420US for not having 500GB or more, because the price is so attractive.

Graphics & Display
The display on the Compaq Presario CQ61-420US is a high definition, 15.6″ diagonal display, which looks stunning.

The natural resolution of the display is 1366×768, and whilst this is not a mainstream resolution, it does make the CQ61-420US look pretty good.

Behind the scenes, the computer has a dedicated 128MB of graphics capabilities, which is not excessive, but certainly useful for graphically demanding programs. The 6 cell lithium ion battery also powers this machine to the brink, meaning you can have more time watching and using, rather than playing around with the power cord.

This notebook comes standard with Windows 7, which is the top rated operating system produced by Microsoft. The Home Premium edition is the best edition available for home users, and will more than satisfy the novice or intermediate user.

Our Rating of the Compaq Presario CQ61-420US
Overall, our experience with the Compaq Presario CQ61-420US has been a positive one. The machine recently received a whopping discount of over $200 – bringing it in to line with a more realistic set of computers.

We believe that when comparing the price and features, you’re definitely getting a good deal with the CQ61-420US. The device receives an overall score of 5 stars from us.
